A poorly sequenced move generates additional costs and cascading blockages. The key is not to “organize early,” but to handle each item in the technical order that avoids unresolved dependencies on the big day.

Energy contracts and meters: the item most people negotiate too late

Contrary to what some supplier interfaces suggest, a move involves a new energy subscription, not a contract transfer. The old contract must be terminated on the departure date, and a new one subscribed with the supplier of your choice for the new home.

The National Energy Mediator recommends contacting the supplier at least fifteen days before moving in. If you miss this deadline, you risk arriving without electricity or gas, with a service activation delay that can extend during peak demand periods.

Record the meter readings (kWh and m³) in both the old and new homes on the day of the move. These contradictory readings protect against billing based on the previous occupant’s consumption. We recommend photographing each meter with a timestamp to create usable evidence in case of disputes.

You will find information on Immobilier Hebdo detailing the termination and subscription sequences specific to each supplier.

Change of address: organizations not covered by the online service

The official online service from Service-Public.fr allows you to notify the tax authorities, CPAM, CAF, and France Travail simultaneously. This one-stop shop creates the illusion of comprehensive processing.

The bank, employer, mutual insurance, doctor, and certain insurers must be notified separately. The most common oversight concerns home insurance: without a change of address declaration, coverage for the new home is not secured, and coverage for the old one continues.

We observe that the most reliable sequence involves addressing organizations in order of financial consequence:

  • Home insurance for the new residence (to be subscribed or transferred before the key handover, otherwise there will be no coverage from day one)
  • Bank and direct debits (a bank account remains valid, but the postal address determines the receipt of regulatory mail)
  • Employer and company mutual insurance (the payslip must reflect the new address for tax declaration)
  • Primary care doctor and local pharmacy (transfer of medical records if you change practitioners)

EPC of the new home: verification before signing the lease

Since January 1, 2025, homes rated G in the energy performance diagnosis are prohibited from being rented in mainland France. If you sign a lease for an old home without checking the EPC, you risk occupying a non-compliant property, with the legal complications that entails.

Request the EPC before any signing. A rating of F should also raise alarms: the next deadlines for prohibitions will affect this category. A property rated F rented today may no longer be rentable in the medium term, jeopardizing your rental stability.

Boxes and loading the truck: the method by unloading zone

The classic mistake is to pack room by room and load the boxes in the order they arrive. The result: a chaotic unloading where kitchen boxes end up in the bedroom.

Label each box by unloading zone in the new home, not by the original room. If the kitchen of the old apartment contained items that will go into the pantry of the new one, the box should be labeled “pantry.” This logic assumes having the plan of the new home in view during packing.

For loading the truck, we recommend placing heavy furniture against the back wall, fragile item boxes last (thus accessible first during unloading), and filling empty spaces with blankets or cushions. A poorly packed truck causes more breakage than insufficient packing.

Home insurance and inventory: two documents to synchronize

The home insurance certificate is required for the entry inventory. Without it, the landlord or agency may refuse to hand over the keys. We recommend subscribing to the contract at least a week before the scheduled date to allow time to receive the certificate.

The exit inventory conditions the return of the security deposit. Photograph each room after emptying the home. Any damage noted at this stage, even minor, can justify deductions. A thorough cleaning before the inventory significantly reduces disputes.

The synchronization between leaving the old home and entering the new one deserves special attention. If the two dates do not coincide, you will incur double rent or need to arrange temporary storage for your furniture and belongings. Negotiate the key handover dates to minimize this overlap to the strictest minimum.

A stress-free move relies less on packing tricks than on adhering to a technical schedule: energy, insurance, change of address, EPC. Each item has a deadline beyond which complications accumulate. Address them in this order, and the transport day will just be a matter of logistics.
